The Coxcatlan Cave was initially excavated as part of Richard MacNeish's Tehuacán Valley Archaeological-Botanical Project (1960-1965). Excavations were continued under the directorship of Robert S. Peabody Foundation of Archaeology (Phillips Academy Department of Archaeology; Robert S. Peabody Museum of Archaeology) Curator Edward Sisson. The project began in 1971, and lasted at least three seasons. Funding was provided by the Robert S. Peabody Foundation of Archaeology, the National Geographic Society, and in the third season, the Rheingold Brewery and the Merrimack Valley Distributing Company.
