Scope & Content |
The Tehuacán Archaeological-Botanical Project had field seasons from 1960 to 1965. MacNeish began surveying Tehuacán Valley in December 1960, and by January 1961 had found deposits with the corncobs he was looking for. As he was working for the Canadian government at the time, he was not eligible to apply for certain U.S. federal grants, and turned to Douglas Byers and Frederick Johnson at the Robert S. Peabody Foundation for Archaeology for possible collaboration. The Peabody secured grants from the National Science Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation, and helped MacNeish administer and execute the project. The records contain field notes, publication research files, notes and figures (photos, drawings, maps), administrative files, photographic material and maps. Field notes include survey notes and ceramics-specific research files and data. Administrative files contain Byers and Johnson correspondence, MacNeish correspondence, accounting records and financial receipts. The photographic material includes negatives and photographs; there is a card catalog index for part of this material. Many of the project's annual reports and formal publications have been digitized and are available online: see the multimedia links. |
